"A SONG FOR PEACE IN THE WORLD"

MAJOR CLOSING CONCERT

ROME - VIA DEI FORI IMPERIALI - SEPTEMBER 5, 2000

United Nations International Day of Peace

BROADCAST LIVE ON TV ALL OVER THE WORLD

A SONG FOR PEACE

Fifty years after the end of the Second World War, peace in the world is still far from being achieved. And yet peace is the most precious thing mankind needs. Everyone should be able to live and raise their children in a world where peace reigns. At present this is not the case in many countries where thousands of adults and children are daily faced with hate, oppression and war. As long as there are children who have only experienced war, there can never be lasting peace in the world.

Music is a form of art whose universal language has the extraordinary capacity to speak straight to men's hearts and can do much to restore peace and improve mankind. The boundaries between the different musical genres collapsed long ago; during the Major Concert world-famous STARS and Artists belonging to ethnic groups and musical cultures from all over the world will be joined on the same stage, united to convey a message of hope, to encourage thinking and goodwill, particularly among the new generations.

Contest announcement

In 1998, the SMT s.r.l., a Music Publishing Company of Rome, Producer with its brand SMT PRODUCTION of Music, Theatre and TV Shows (hereinafter referred to as the Organiser), announces the INTERNATIONAL CONTEST FOR SONGWRITERS "A Song for Peace in the World", aimed at the composition of original new songs inspired by the theme of Peace. These songs may be of any musical genre, from classical to traditional, popular, or light music, and any musical style: melody, pop, rock, rap, and so on..

The boundaries between the different musical genres collapsed long ago. Classical, traditional and light music artists join together in the same events more and more frequently. "A Song for Peace in the World" is the first International Contest meant for musicians of all genres and styles, who are invited to compose original songs inspired by the theme of Peace. The Contest "A Song for Peace in the World" is an initiative which aims at stimulating and raising the awareness of Composers and Lyricists from all over the world to this major universal social issue.

The Contest is expressly meant for Songwriters of all nationalities who are registered at an internationally-acknowledged Music Rights Society, without age limit. . The Contest Announcement will be sent to 124 countries, that is to say those where a Music Rights Society has been found. The term "Songwriters" used in this Contest Announcement and Rules refers to both the composer and the lyricist of a song. Each song may also be entered in the Contest by a single Songwriter who has written both the music and the lyrics of the song. Conversely, a song composed by more than one Songwriter must be entered jointly by all of its Songwriters.

An International Jury will choose 30 of the songs entered in the Contest. The first world performance of the songs selected will take place during a Major Concert to be organised in Rome as part of the Year 2000 Jubilee events. . The Concert will be held in Via dei Fori Imperiali on September 5 of the year 2000, the United Nations International Peace Day, and will be broadcast live on TV all over the world. The songs will be sung in the original languages of the countries of origin, by their Songwriters if they are also singers of a high artistic level, or by singers who are particularly representative of those countries or ethnic groups, chosen by the Organiser. Moreover, the Organiser reserves the right to increase the number of songs to be selected and performed during the Concert from the original 30 to a maximum of 40. The songs will subsequently be collected on a record produced by SMT s.r.l. with its brand SMT RECORDS, which will be distributed on the international market.

The following prizes will be awarded to the Songwriters of the songs selected:

  1. free round-trip journey and stay in Rome on occasion of the MAJOR CLOSING CONCERT;
